Clare schoolmaster. Cúirt an Mheán Oíche (The Midnight Court, c. 1780) is a thousand-line comic tour de force in which a women's court arraigns the men of Ireland for celibacy and sexual failure. Banned in English translation in Ireland in 1946 while circulating freely in the original Irish — one of the sharpest illustrations of how censorship treated the two languages.
