Meath labourer and trade unionist, discovered by Lord Dunsany. Enlisted in the British Army, mourned MacDonagh in his finest poem, and was killed by a shell at Ypres in July 1917 — an emblem of the Irishman caught between two allegiances. The Francis Ledwidge International Poetry Award is named for him.
