Patrick Pearse (Pádraig Mac Piarais)

Barrister, educationalist, founder of St Enda's, and author of a small, intense body of poetry in both languages — Mise Éire, The Mother, The Fool. Executed 3 May 1916. Some later scholarship has read a homoerotic current in poems such as Little Lad of the Tricks; the question is genuinely contested rather than settled, and is recorded here as scholarly debate, not as fact.
