Born at Ballintubbert, Co. Laois, son of a Church of Ireland clergyman; raised in England from the age of two. One of the 1930s Auden group and UK Poet Laureate from 1968 until his death. He described himself as "an Anglo-Irish poet" and is claimed, with varying enthusiasm, by both traditions. Father of the actor Daniel Day-Lewis.
