Customs official for his whole working life, and simultaneously the most trusted critic of poetry in Ireland. Stepping Stones (2008), his book-length interviews with Heaney, is the closest thing to a Heaney autobiography. Poetry Now Award 2013 for Dear Life, posthumously.
