Poets born from 1939: the Northern generation, Innti, and the present scene.

Poets born from 1939 onward, and the most crowded part of the directory. The Northern generation — Heaney, Longley, Mahon, and after them Muldoon, McGuckian and Carson — emerged as the Troubles began, and the relationship between the two facts has been argued about ever since.

In the Republic, Kinsella reconnected English-language Ireland to the Gaelic past through The Táin and An Duanaire. Eavan Boland confronted a tradition that had made women into emblems and insisted on their actual lives instead. In Irish, the Innti generation brought the counterculture into the language.

It is the largest period in the directory, and most of its poets are living.
