Born in Kilfinane, Co. Limerick; died at Monkstown, Dublin, aged 76, of cancer. Extraordinarily prolific — over 180 books, and far more counting editions and translations. Poet, haikuist, tankaist, essayist and translator into Irish of Heaney, Tagore and Iqbal, and of Tintin, Astérix and The Gruffalo. Aosdána member and a tireless champion of the language. President Catherine Connolly led the tributes; he was remembered at a bilingual funeral Mass, and had written letters to the editor of The Irish Times for fifty years.
