Born in Lancashire to Irish doctors, raised in the Kerry Gaeltacht. Her work draws on folklore, myth and the bean sí tradition to write female desire and anger with startling directness. Collections including Pharaoh's Daughter and The Fifty Minute Mermaid appear as facing-page bilingual editions with translations by Muldoon, Heaney, McGuckian, Ní Chuilleanáin and others. Ireland Professor of Poetry 2001–2004 — the first Professor of Irish-language poetry.
