Belfast-born son of a Church of Ireland bishop; educated in England, worked at the BBC. Autumn Journal (1939) is a long poem in 24 cantos written on the eve of the war, and Snow and Bagpipe Music are permanently in the anthologies. Long claimed by both English and Irish traditions; the Northern poets of the 1960s claimed him decisively.
