The early and medieval tradition (c. 6th–16th centuries)
The long arc of poetry in Irish from the monastic period to the collapse of the bardic order — anonymous marginalia, court elegy, the fili and their schools. It is among the oldest continuously attested vernacular traditions in Western Europe, and for most of its length it was a profession rather than a vocation.
